Our UW Medicine Preceptors
An INP nurse preceptor is a UW Medicine nurse who has extensive experience in her field of expertise and has specialty education in the skill of nurse precepting. In this role, the nurse preceptor teaches bedside nursing practice through role modeling and education. The preceptor works one-on-one with the trainee, first demonstrating nursing tasks and then facilitating the preceptee in performing those nursing tasks under close observation. This task learning is always coupled with the preceptor teaching the critical thinking skills behind each task. The preceptor and preceptee work as one unit to provide care to their patient assignments.
To date each of our INP nurse preceptors have received extensive training in critical care management and based on their demonstration of teaching skills, nursing knowledge, and bedside practice, they were hired to become one of their unit's nurse preceptors. Each nurse completed a preceptor training course and demonstrates annual competency in this field.
Furthermore, our INP nurse preceptors have all received training on culturally competent nursing practice, intercultural communication, and our INP programs.
Each nurse visits our partnerships to help facilitate the local nurse champions (LNC) with implementation and evaluation of a post graduate nursing education and training program. Their expertise and extraordinary personal efforts is what makes everything we do at the INP possible.
